REDS are from the charmingly bucolic New York City, but sound like
their hearts lie a wee bit further south in our nation's capital.
Is:Means as a lot of shouting and banging in the Fugazi mold, and
judging by the whole defaced dollar thing they've got going on in
their artwork, some anti-establishment leaning to boot. They also have
serious ties New York's DIY scene, with guitarist Dima having tenured
with The Fiction and currently pulling double duty singing in Puppies.
Singer Evan co-released this record on his Waking Records label along
with bassist Randy's Dark Cit Records. They are also so DIY that they
don't update their website or (gag) MySpace account, so they are
irritatingly hard to keep up with or track down live. Evan's vocals
alternate between an Ian MacKaye bark and a singing voice that sounds
a lot like D Boon. Not bad, but oddly old school for the kids of
today. Reds' strengths lie in their arrangements; they know when to
let things simmer before they boil. But when they do boil, songs like
songs, including "Instrumental" and "Waiting for the Barbarians" open
up a shrapnel bomb of woop-ass that levels the playing field for
today's DIY hardcore scene. (Rob Browning)
