The Fiction/Birthday Boyz Split 7"
Split 7" waking records 04

i had been waiting to hear new stuff from the fiction for a while, so i was stoked when i got this in the mail. if you haven't heard the fiction before, they play hardcore/indie in the vein of saetia (i guess that's the most notable comparison anyways). while starting out fast and heavy, they tend to change towards more mellow and jammed out parts, utilizing harmonies and melodies that are catchy and keep you listening. out of the two songs they contribute to this split, i like the second one a bit more. it seems to have more urgency to it, though the first one is awesome in it's own right.

up next is birthday boyz, whom i have never heard prior to this release. the name itself reminds me of the birthday party. but yeah, anyhow. birthday boyz contribute one song to this split. it starts out with a beautiful harmony, and then go into all out insanity. it's one of those situations where you have a feeling it's going to happen, but when it happens you're still like "woah!", haha. they then go into a sort of a breakdown part with a beautiful lead melody that slowly broods and builds up as it progresses into the ending. leaning more towards today's "screamo" sound than the fiction does, however these guys are fucking awesome. they have a way of really making you want to move.

overall, a fucking awesome split. the bands and the labels all did a great job on this. it's been spinning a lot on my turntable since i received it! pick it up!
