Scent Of Human History/Memory As Perfection
Split 12"

Until a couple of weeks ago, these
two bands were very unknown to me. Even the pre-s.o.h.h. band Sometimes
Walking, Sometimes Running was a 'huh?' for me. Yup, just you try
to keep up with all those newer screamo bands popping up on every
corner near American record stores. But we try...and releases like
this help us to keep up to date. When i first got a look at this
record i was very curious to hear it. The artwork is very nice (the
s.o.h.h insert is really really cool), and it's a pro-bike benefit!
And of course there's the music. Memory As Perfection have this
Off Minor feel to me (especially "A velvet painting..."), the 'guitary
pingly pingly' stuff we all love, combined with the more emo-isch
build ups. A bit manic at times, but nothing too drastic. They maintain
a nice flow in their songs, with dancefloor filler potential. I
can not spot one bad song & "Motive" is just a brilliant tune with
a superb middle piece which should be a lot longer than it is. "What
we fear the most is our motivation"...i hear ya. The only overall
remark i have has to do with the vocals. They sound a tad too forced,
you know the 'brrggrraa' sound...just let yourself go man, naturally.
Scent Of Human History has a more crazy sound, harsher and even
spazzy at times. Their songs aren't as memorable to me as those
of MAP. They take time to let a song evolve and that makes it a
bit too monotonous for me sometimes. The melodies are definitely
allright and everything sounds good. But i have a feeling there
are some different parts too "pasted" together, which makes it a
bit too weird and unnatural to me. Not bad, but not too brilliant
either. But, all in all a very good release.
